Make PDF processing part of the whole workflow
n8n connects the systems that move your work forward. The pdfRest API Toolkit node adds document processing to those connections, so a file can arrive, be prepared for its next use, and reach its destination in one automated flow.
- 01
Receive
Start with an attachment, a new file, or a scheduled task.
- 02
Process
Apply the PDF operations your next step needs.
- 03
Deliver
Save the result and update the connected systems.
Operation availability and usage depend on your pdfRest deployment and plan. Cloud Starter and Container Trial apply watermarks or, for some output types, text redactions. Compare pdfRest plans.
Connect your systems with n8n
n8n is a visual workflow automation platform. You connect nodes on a canvas to receive data, make decisions, call services, and send results onward. A trigger starts the process, such as a new email attachment, a file added to storage, or a scheduled run.
The pdfRest node supplies the document operations inside that process. Choose an operation, connect your pdfRest credential, and map the incoming file. n8n coordinates the surrounding steps while pdfRest processes the document. You can build these connections without writing custom PDF integration code.
Get more from every document workflow
Use commercial PDF processing across your workflows
PDF handling can become a maintenance project of its own. pdfRest gives you a consistent API for document tasks, reducing the work of assembling and maintaining separate processing tools. Configure the operations your files need and test them against representative documents before rolling out the workflow.
Place processing where it fits your requirements
Choose pdfRest Cloud for hosted processing or a Container or AWS deployment for infrastructure you manage. Choose your n8n host separately. With self-hosted n8n and a reachable private pdfRest deployment, the PDF processing step can run within your network.
Connect the file to the business process
A compressed file is more useful when it also reaches the right folder, updates a record, and triggers the next task. n8n brings those actions together across email, storage, databases, customer relationship management systems, and webhooks. Fewer manual handoffs mean fewer opportunities to miss a step.
Combine operations and decisions
Build a sequence such as optical character recognition (OCR), text extraction, and compression. Add n8n conditions to route different documents to different operations, and configure error handling to send failed items for review. The value grows as the PDF step becomes part of a repeatable process.
Extend a working automation
Start with one incoming file and one output. Later, connect another source, add a processing step, or change the destination. The same pdfRest API is available for direct integrations when part of the process moves into your own application.
Put the combination to work
Prepare incoming documents for search
Receive scanned documents, add searchable text with OCR, extract text for a downstream search or analysis system, and save the processed file with its record. Add review steps where the workflow requires them.
Prepare PDFs for delivery
Collect files from a shared folder, compress them with pdfRest, and save the delivery copies to a separate destination. Have n8n record the outcome and notify the team when the workflow completes.
Build document packages
Gather the files needed for a case or project, convert supported inputs to PDF, merge the documents in the required order, and route the assembled package to the next system. Each operation becomes a visible step you can inspect and adjust.
Start with an n8n workflow
Use an existing workflow to see how PDF processing connects to file storage and the next step in your process.
Compress Google Drive PDFs on arrival
Download the workflow JSON, connect Google Drive and pdfRest, and choose your folders. The workflow watches for incoming PDFs, compresses each file, and saves a separate processed copy.
Convert and merge documents from Dropbox
Follow a walkthrough that retrieves an image from Dropbox, converts it to PDF, saves it back to storage, and merges it with another PDF. This guide uses n8n HTTP Request nodes to call pdfRest directly.
For imported templates, connect your own credentials, review the account-specific settings, and test with a sample document before enabling automatic runs.
Choose how to connect
The verified pdfRest community node works with n8n Cloud and self-hosted n8n. The installation path changes with your n8n environment; the core document-processing workflow stays familiar.
Connect through n8n Cloud
Choose n8n Cloud when you want a managed workflow environment and less infrastructure administration. Open your workspace, install pdfRest API Toolkit from the nodes panel, and connect your pdfRest credential. pdfRest Cloud offers a straightforward hosted pairing.
The dedicated guide covers installation, endpoint selection, file inputs and outputs, and your first test.
Connect through self-hosted n8n
Choose self-hosted n8n when you need control over the workflow environment or access to private systems. Install the pdfRest package through Community Nodes, then connect to pdfRest Cloud or a reachable self-hosted pdfRest endpoint.
The dedicated guide covers local startup options, node installation, deployment credentials, network considerations, and the first test workflow.
Two separate hosting choices: self-hosting n8n does not automatically self-host pdfRest. Files still go to the pdfRest endpoint selected in your credential. A private endpoint is not automatically reachable from n8n Cloud.
Use one node for a range of PDF tasks
The node includes operations for conversion, compression, merging, splitting, OCR, text and image extraction, forms, redaction, and signing. Choose a single operation or combine several nodes into a longer processing sequence.
Available operations depend on the installed node version, pdfRest deployment, and plan. Check the operation list in your node before designing a workflow; API capabilities and node coverage can differ.
Questions
Do I need to write code?
The node exposes PDF processing through the n8n editor. You still need to configure credentials, file mappings, and the surrounding workflow. Self-hosting also requires someone to manage the environment.
Which hosting option should I choose?
Use n8n Cloud to reduce hosting work. Use self-hosted n8n when deployment control and private network access are priorities and your team can maintain the service. Both can connect to pdfRest Cloud.
Can I start with an existing workflow?
Yes. Add the pdfRest node where a document needs processing, or start with a workflow and configure its credentials and account-specific settings. Test with a sample document before enabling automatic runs.
